But what if my stainless steel jewelry rusts?

In case you have come to this point, there are commercial cleaners that can help you like baking soda paste. To avoid it, just apply the few rules above.

  However, you will need to remove your steel jewelry if you handle household products, as they can attack the metal.

Does stainless steel change color?

The change in color of this material is due to oxidation. Steel is more or less sensitive to it, depending on its composition. Darkening is therefore possible, but it will take place over several years. Note that a skin with high acidity will promote darkening of the stainless steel.

Does stainless steel jewelry rust?

Certain components are chosen to improve the metal's resistance to corrosion. The stainless steel is then protected by a transparent oxide film which prevents oxidation. This thin layer is formed naturally and reformed in the event of an impact.

However, certain factors can promote the formation of rust on its surface. These are sea air, sea water, salt, sulfur and acidic substances.

What is stainless steel?

It is an alloy of iron, chromium, nickel and carbon. It has many advantages:

  • As the name suggests, it is stainless. This means it won't tarnish, change color, or rust.

  • It is not corrosive. It is very resistant. It does not deform.

  • It is hot malleable. It can be engraved.

  • It is hypoallergenic. It does not cause an allergic reaction on the skin, nor redness, except in rare cases.

  • It is easy to maintain. It is not afraid of rust or stains. However, its color can be alternated due to dust, sweat, perfume, hairspray, cosmetics and hygiene products.

How to clean blackened steel?

Clean your steel jewelry with a small amount of toothpaste applied to a toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. You can also rub it with a cloth dampened with a few drops of white alcohol vinegar or lemon juice diluted with a little water.

We also use:

  • a mixture of hot water and baking soda;

  • Marseille soap or;

  • dishwashing liquid.

After cleaning your stainless steel jewelry, take the time to rinse it well and dry it thoroughly.

The finishing coat of gold or pink stainless steel jewelry will not withstand acidic solutions. So avoid lemon juice, vinegar or toothpaste on colored steel.
